I was in fourth grade when I became an official Cub Scout. It was a fun time of building friendships with guys from my school and learning lots of cool stuff. One of the badges that could be earned was from learning a few magic tricks. I was pleased to find out that they still encourage that skill. This came about when I was recently given the privilege of teaching a cub scout magic workshop to a group of scouts from Pack 735, Den 2 in the Richmond area. These guys were quick learners that asked some insightful questions.
The first thing that I taught them was the Magician’s Code:
1) Practice before you perform.
2) Don’t repeat a trick for the same audience.
3) Don’t tell your secrets.
At that point, one scout wisely pointed out that I’m breaking the code by teaching them the secrets to the tricks they were to learn that day. I clarified that the rule is that we can tell our secrets, but only to people who are trying to learn to perform magic. Not just for people who are curious.
I shared with them about 10 tricks that could be learned in about 40 minutes. These tricks used mostly items found around the house. Learning to perform magic tricks helps the scouts to earn a certain merit badge. At the end of the session, their parents gathered to enjoy their scouts presenting their magic and mind reading tricks. It was a fun time and seemed to be enjoyed by all.
